Impressive showing at Munster and Connaught Age Groups

The Munster and Connaught Age Group Championships were held at the University of Limerick pool over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend, and Fermoy Swimming Club had 4 swimmers competing over the 3 days.

As Connaught do not have a 50m pool complex, they combine with Munster for the long course championships, which makes the competition even tougher for everyone. As it turned out, the boom in UL pool is in need of repair, so the meet had to be run short course, with times achieved then converted to LC and eligible for qualification for Div1 and 2.

Representing Fermoy Swimming Club at the Munster and Connaught Age Group Championships 2018 were Fiona Miao, Zoe Daniels-Howard, Jodie Baker and Zach Daniels-Howard.

Our first swimmer to take to the blocks was Fiona Miao. Fiona swam 4 events, and qualified for the final in 3 of the 4, a wonderful achievement. She swam a pb of -1.88 in the 200 back, 5thplace overall, -0.18 in the 100m breast, a whopping pb of -3.25 in the 200IM and 6thplace overall, and -1.12 in the 100 back for 5thplace overall. Well done Fiona. Fiona’s next competition is the Irish Age Groups and Summer Open (Div 1), and we wish her well with her training.

Next up was Zoe Daniels-Howard, who was swimming both breaststroke distances. Zoe claimed silver in the 100m breaststroke, managing to swim the exact same time in both prelims and final, down to the millisecond! Well done Zoe. In the 200m breaststroke prelims Zoe had a super pb of -2.8, qualifying for the final as second fastest swimmer again, but unfortunately had to scratch due to injury. Zoe’s next competition is the Scottish National Open Swimming Championships at the end of June, and we wish her well with her training.

Sibling rivalry is not an issue for Zach Daniels-Howard, as his favoured stroke is the backstroke, and he took to the blocks in the Age 12 100m backstroke with a huge task to try and make finals, against a very strong field of older, more experienced swimmers. Zach swam a super pb time of -5.92, narrowly missing out on a finals spot, but very happy with his time. Zach is currently training for Irish Division 2 Championships at the beginning of July, good luck Zach.

Jodie Baker took on no less than 5 events at the Age Group Championships, and qualified for the finals in all 5, fantastic swimming by Jodie. She took bronze in 100 free, silver in the 200IM, 4thplace in the 200m breaststroke, bronze in the 50m free, and silver in the 200m free. Superb performances by Jodie against some very tough competition. She is preparing to travel to the Scottish National Open Swimming Championships at the end of June, good luck with the training Jodie!
