Great experience for swimmers at Munster & Connacht Qualifying Meet

We had five swimmers at last weekend’s Munster and Connacht Qualifying Meet which was held in UL – Jodie Baker, Fiona Miao, Mary O’Donnell, Zach Daniels-Howard and William Verling.

Jodie was first up in the 200m freestyle and took a very impressive -6.21 seconds off her previous time, finishing just two places outside the medals, and securing her national division 1 qualifying time for this summer’s championships. There was also a pb to be had by Fiona Miao who took -1.11 seconds off her time in the 200m backstroke, also achieving the coveted division 1 time. Not to be out-done, Mary O’Donnell also saw her time improve by -0.82. Impressive swimming from the girls in the very competitive Age 14 and Over category.

William and Zach were flying the flag for the boys, and a fantastic effort from William saw him blow his previous times out of the water, recording a -4.98 second pb in the Age 12-13 100m Backstroke and a -3.97 pb 12-13 100m Freestyle. In the Age 10-11 category, Zach also pb’d, coming in -1.79 faster than his previous best and winning a bronze medal. He went one place better in the 100m Freestyle, coming home with a silver medal in this event.

Zach Daniels-Howard with his silver medal from last weekend’s Munster and Connacht Qualifying Meet.

Well done to all of you for your hard work and effort in competing at these galas and putting yourselves up against some of the best swimmers out there. It’s all great experience for future competitions.

BEST OF LUCK

Best wishes to our swimmers who are taking part in this weekend’s All-Ireland National Schools finals in the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin. We have three swimmers travelling to represent their schools, having qualified from the Munster Championships in November – Sophie Baker (Grange NS), Melina Pyrovolaki (Presentation, Fermoy) and Zach Daniels-Howard (Scoil Bhride, Rathcormac).  We hope ye enjoy the experience of competing at ‘swimming headquarters’, the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. It’s sure to be a memorable day for you all. We also have some members travelling to UL this weekend for the National Junior Indoor Stillwater Championships, and we wish them the best of luck with their weekend also. We hope ye get the lightest mannequins!
